Fellow London side Brentford, playing in their first semi-final in a major cup competition, started brightly but fell behind in the 12th minute when unmarked French midfielder Sissoko headed in a fine Sergio Reguilon cross from the left.
The visitors thought they had drawn level after the break when striker Ivan Toney headed home but the goal was disallowed for a very tight offside, which was spotted by VAR.
Spurs responded to that let-off with South Korean forward Son collecting a fine pass from Tanguy Ndombele and bursting goalwards before slotting past keeper David Raya to make it 2-0.
Second-tier Brentford's disappointment was compounded when Josh Dasilva was sent off six minutes from the end for an over-the-top challenge on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
United host City in the other semi-final at Old Trafford tomorrow.

WTA announces schedule
The WTA has announced a provisional calendar for the women's tennis tour with events lined up until the Wimbledon championships in June-July.

The sport's governing body had previously announced the first seven weeks of the tour, starting with the season-opening WTA 500 event in Abu Dhabi this week.
Apart from the three Grand Slams -- Australian Open (starting Feb. 8), French Open (May 23) and Wimbledon (June 28) -- the first half of the year will have four WTA 1000 events in Dubai and Miami (both in March), Madrid (April) and Rome (May).
Other WTA 500 events on the schedule include Doha and St Petersburg (March) and Charleston and Stuttgart (April).
The rebranded Fed Cup, now known as the Billie Jean King Cup, is scheduled to start on April 12.
However, there is no new date announced for the prestigious BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament in Indian Wells, often called the "fifth major" and usually held in March, which was postponed last week due to COVID-19 concerns.

Colin Bell dies
Former England and Manchester City midfielder Colin Bell has died aged 74 following a short illness.
Bell, part of City's 1967-68 First Division title-winning team, scored 152 goals in 492 games for the Manchester club between 1966 and 1979.
He also won the FA Cup, League Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup at City.
Bell, who had a stand named after him at the Etihad stadium in 2004, played 48 times for England.

Proteas sweep Sri Lanka
South Africa completed a sweep of their two match series against Sri Lanka as they strolled to a 10-wicket win on the third day of the second test.

South Africa knocked off a target of 67 runs without loss as openers Dean Elgar (31 not out) and Aiden Markram (36 not out) saw them to victory at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg with two and a half days of the contest still remaining.
Success in Johannesburg followed a convincing innings and 45-run triumph in the first test in Pretoria last week and turns around a poor run of test form over the last year.
Sri Lanka were bowled out for 211 in their second innings, surviving only 95 minutes of Tuesday's morning session.
Captain Dimuth Karunaratne reached his 10th test century.
South Africa now look ahead to their first visit in 14 years to Pakistan, where they will play two tests and three Twenty20 internationals later this month, while Sri Lanka return home to host England in two tests in Galle.

40 positive tests in EPL
The English Premier League said a total of 40 individuals tested positive for Covid-19, the highest number of cases in a week this season, in two rounds of tests conducted last week.
Since the new season kicked off, 171 individuals in the English top-flight have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in 19 rounds of testing.
The league, which is now conducting tests twice per week, did not name the people who tested positive but said they will self-isolate for 10 days.
Last week, Fulham's games at Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur were called off due to a Covid-19 outbreak at the west London club, while Manchester City's match at Everton was cancelled due to fresh Covid-19 cases reported at the Etihad club.

Jones not coming back
Crusaders and Canterbury assistant coach Mark Jones will not return to New Zealand and will instead take up the position with English club, Worcester Warriors.
Jones, a former Welsh international who joined Canterbury and the Crusaders teams in 2020 and filled a specialist role assisting with team defence and position-specific player development, returned home to Wales with his wife and two children following the conclusion of Canterbury's Mitre 10 Cup campaign.
He made the difficult decision not to return to New Zealand amid the current COVID-19 pandemic, and has since been offered a coaching role closer to home, alongside former teammate Jonathan Thomas at Worcester.
The Crusaders are currently working through options to cover Mark Jones' portfolio, including a potential replacement, but no decision has been made as yet.
Peterhansel holds onto Dakar lead
Stephane Peterhansel retained his Dakar Rally lead in the car category after the third stage as Qatari Nasser Al-Attiyah closed the gap to five minutes in the Saudi Arabian desert dunes and canyons.

Triple champion Al-Attiyah in a Toyota is now second overall, with Peterhansel's Mini buggy team mate and defending champion Carlos Sainz dropping to fourth after straying off route.
Peterhansel, 'Mr Dakar' because of his record 13 victories in the event on two wheels and four, had an early puncture and was third in the stage behind Toyota's South African Henk Lategan.
In the motorcycle category, Australian Toby Price on a KTM took his second stage win of the event while American Skyler Howes also on a KTM took the overall lead.

Lions tour could be held at home
The British and Irish Lions rugby series with South Africa could be held in the UK and Ireland if Covid-19 prevents fans from travelling.

That is among the contingency plans discussed by the Lions board in the event the trip has to be abandoned.
Instead, games would be played in Edinburgh, London, Cardiff, and Dublin.
The South African rugby union has previously made it clear that a tour without visiting fans would not be commercially viable for them.
The Lions board is also thought to be unenthusiastic about the Idea.
However, it is hoped that a vaccine would allow for fans to attend games in the UK in June and July.
A warm-up contest with Japan is already scheduled for Murrayfield in Edinburgh on 26 June.
