Liverpool agree to sign Joe Cole

The midfielder Joe Cole has been given the chance to rekindle his football career by joining Liverpool after being released by Chelsea in May.

The 28-year-old Cole was once regarded as one of England's most exciting prospects as a teenager at West Ham United.

He's Liverpool's second pre-season signing after Milan Jovanovic and the new Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson's first big signing since he took over from Rafael Benitez at the start of the month.

Liverpool's website says the England midfielder has agreed personal terms on a four-year contract and will undergo a medical in the next 48 hours.

Cole was also a target for Arsenal and Tottenham and his decision to move north is a coup for Hodgson as he starts trying to push Liverpool back into the Premier League's top four.

Liverpoool finished the Premier League season in seventh and haven't won the English title since 1990.
