The British driver, Justin Wilson, won his first IndyCar Series pole to end Team Penske's streak at eight, turning a series track-record lap of 168.69 km/h on the Toronto street circuit.
The series leader, Will Power of Australia, qualified second.
Power says it was a tough qualifying session, and Wilson was just too good on the day.
But he says he feels good about tomorrow's race, despite rain being forecast.
