He completed the 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 20km run in three hours, 43 minutes and 26 seconds - more than two minutes clear of second-placed Australian Sam Appleton.

The New Zealand Ironman champion, Bozzone was forced to withdraw from October's world ironman champs in Hawaii after a slow recovery from a cycling crash in July

He said afterwards said he was just happy to be alive, believing he was hit by a truck while on a ride in West Auckland. Police said there was no evidence to suggest a truck was involved.

Att the time Bozzone said that while he had no memory of the crash, he was certain another vehicle was involved.

"You don't snap a very expensive bike like mine in two pieces, and suffer the sorts of injuries I have by just falling off. I've been in this sport for nearly 20 years so I think I am a very experienced rider."
