Chasing 167 for victory the Black Caps were bowled out for 119 in the 17th over.

Pakistan scored an impressive 166 for three in their 20 overs with Babar Azam making 79 and Mohammad Hafeez unbeaten on 53.

Colin de Grandhomme took two wickets and Lockie Ferguson one.

In reply the Black Caps made a solid start and were up with the run-rate for most of their innings.

However they regularly lost wickets, their last eight for 23 runs as they slumped from 96 for two to 119 all out.

Captain Kane Williamson hit 60 off 38 balls, but Glenn Phillips with 26 and Ish Sodhi with 11 were the only other players to reach double figures.

Williamson said Pakistan's total was always going to be challenging.

"At the halfway stage, on that surface, that was a very good total," he said.

"They batted very well, did very well to keep wickets in hand - they played superbly well on a tricky surface."

While the Black Caps started strongly, Williamson said the quickfire nature of T20 cricket eventually took its toll, and Pakistan's clinical finishing proved too much.

"They're very accurate, bowled to the areas of the ground that they want to be hit to. Very good bowling attack, and we'll try to keep learning from them in these conditions.

"It's a tough pill to swallow today, but we've got to put that behind us and look ahead to the one-day series."

The two teams play a three-match ODI series, the first game in Abu Dhabi in three days.
