The Breakers have filled the last-minute gap in last season's roster, signing centre Shawn Long on a one-year contract to replace import Jerrelle Benimon.

Signed as a starting centre, Benimon was released earlier this week before arriving in New Zealand due to family reasons.

Long, 25, boasts a solid resume which includes a short-term contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, where he averaged eight points and five rebounds across seven games of the 2016-17 NBA season.

Breakers coach Kevin Braswell expects Long will create another scoring option for the team, and his ability to stretch the defence with his three-point shot will also be a valuable addition.

"I know that he will help us on both sides of the ball - he is a great scorer and versatile on offence, and on defence he will alter shots and help us to throw different looks at teams," Braswell said.

Long joins the Breakers this week to prepare for the NBL Blitz in September and the pre-season game against the Phoenix Suns on October 3.
