A good finish for New Zealand cyclists on the Tour of Gila in New Mexico with Beijing Olympian Catherine Cheatley winning the final 171-kilometre stage to Pinos Altos for her US team Colavita Baci.

Cheatley staked her claim for a place in the road team for the Commonwealth Games when she and overall winner Mara Abbott broke away, with the New Zealander proving too strong to claim the stage win and finish third on overall standings.

New Zealand track star Jesse Sergent also starred when he won the 26-km individual time trial stage at the weekend, beating off overall winner Levi Leipheimer, US time trial champion Dave Zabriskie and Lance Armstrong.
