The Black Caps coach Mike Hesson says its too early to say just whether or not it was the right call to leave pace bowler Tim Southee out of the first test against South Africa.
South Africa will resume at 229 for four this morning at University Oval in Dunedin after skipper Faf du Plessis won the toss and decided to bat.
New Zealand opted to play two spinners in Jeetan Patel and Mitch Santner, leaving out Southee for the first time in five years.

"You wait till the end of the match before those things can be judged...we've got three very good seamers and it was something that Kane, myself and the senior players spent a bit of time tossing and no matter which way went it was a difficult decision," said Hesson.
"I thought the spinners did a really good job on the first day of the test match in terms of a holding role.
After the first ten or twelve overs we didn't get a lot out of the ball from the seamers perspective."
