Williams breaks another record

Serena Williams has become the outright most successful women's player at major tennis championships at the US Open.

The American veteran thrashed Sweden's Johanna Larsson 6-2 6-1 to tie Roger Federer's all-time Open Era record of 307 grand slam match victories, and go past the great Martina Navratilova's 306 wins.

Elsewhere in the women's draw, fourth-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska knocked out 25th seeded Caroline Garcia of France 6-2 6-3, while fifth seed Simona Halep of Romania needed three sets to beat 31st-seeded Hungarian Timea Babos 6-1 2-6 6-4.

Scottish second seed Andy Murray was pushed hard by Italian Paulo Lorenzi before winning 7-6 5-7 6-2 6-3 in the evening feature match.

Murray now faces Bulgarian 22nd seed Grigor Dimitrov, who also needed four sets to knock out Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-4 6-1 3-6 6-2.

Other men's winners included former champion Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina, who beat 11th seed David Ferrer 7-6 6-2 6-3, and eighth seeded Austrian Dominic Thiem, who came back from a set down to edge another Spaniard, Pablo Carreno 1-6 6-4 6-4 7-5.

New Zealander Michael Venus's campaign in New York is over, losing in the second round of the doubles.

Venus and Croatian partner Mate Pavic went down to the fifth seeds, Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer and Romanian Horia Tecau winning 6-2 6-2.
