Counties Manukau have beaten Bay of Plenty 39-34 at home in Pukekohe, as they notched their first win of the new provincial rugby season.

Three Steelers tries in six minutes in the second half, while the Steamers had a player in the sin bin, were the difference for Counties.

The victory lifts them up to third on the Premiership ladder, while Bay of Plenty stay dead last in the Championship.

Champions Canterbury are on top of the top division from Taranaki, after the red and blacks put Tasman to the sword in the second half of their clash in Christchurch.

The Makos had done well to stay within touching distance at half-time, when Canterbury led 16-9, and there was just a single try between them, before the score blew out in the final quarter, the hosts winning 45-14.
