Do-or-die time for Black Sticks on quieter day nine

9:28 pm on 14 August 2016

Rio 2016 Olympics - After the fireworks on the water this morning, day nine is expected to be a lot quieter for New Zealand's Rio Olympic athletes.

It will be pretty hard to top rower Mahe Drysdale's incredible win by a hair's breadth, but the men's hockey team will give it a crack - they face Germany in a do-or-die quarter-final match at 11.30am (NZT).

Germany are the only men's team unbeaten at Rio, and cruised through to the knockout stages top of their group.

The women's team has to wait until Tuesday morning for their quarter-final against Australia.

After a horror third round, golfer Danny Lee is all but out of medal contention as he and Danny Fox wrap up their campaign from 10.30pm.

There is plenty of sailing from 4am, including decent medal hopes Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie, who sit in sixth in the 470 event.

Gemma Jones and Jason Saunders, who currently lie in fourth, take to the water from 5am.

The favourites in the men's 49er class, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke, have a day off and return on Tuesday morning for their next race.

In the velodrome, cyclists Natasha Hansen and Liv Podmore will try to qualify in the individual sprint from 7am, while Dylan Kennett takes part in the men's omnium scratch race at 7.40am.
