The New Zealand women's cricket team has beaten Australia by 4 wickets in the first of three Twenty20 clashes in Wellington.

White Ferns captain Suzie Bates won the toss and put Australia into bat at the Basin Reserve.

Australia made 113 for 7 in their twenty overs - Meg Lanning top scored for the visitors with 30 runs.

Leigh Kasperek was the pick of the White Ferns' bowlers, picking up 4 wickets for 7 runs from just three overs.

New Zealand lost 6 wickets before chasing down the target with 9 balls remaining.

Suzie Bates top scored with 33, and was well supported by Sara McGlashan, who made 22.
