The Otago Volts cricketers have qualified in top position for this coming weekend's domestic Twenty20 finals after beating Northern Districts by 56 runs at Mount Maunganui.

The Volts made 178 for four after being sent in to bat, and in reply the hosts were all out for 122 in the 17th over.

The Canterbury Kings sewed up the last playoff spot with a 16-run win over Central Districts in their winner-takes-all clash at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

The Kings hit 166 for six off their 20 overs then restricted Central to 149 for nine.

Shane Watson was out for a duck opening the batting for the Kings, while fellow former Australian star Mike Hussey made 43.

The Auckland Aces were thrashed by seven wickets by the Wellington Firebirds at Eden Park, but the Aucklanders had already qualified for the top-three playoffs. They finished one victory behind Otago and one defeat ahead of Canterbury in the round robin.

The Aces were rolled for just 109 in the 19th over and the visiting Firebirds strolled to the target, making 110 for three in 15 overs and one ball.

Wellington were already out of finals contention.
