England striker Andy Carroll will have knee surgery next week and is likely to miss the rest of the season, his Premier League football club West Ham United says.
Carroll was injured after coming on as a second-half substitute in the 0-0 draw against Southampton in midweek.
Since joining on a permanent basis from Liverpool in June 2013 for West Ham's record signing fee of around $31 million, Carroll has been plagued with injuries, spending long periods on the sidelines.
He missed the first half of the 2013-14 season with a heel injury and the beginning of this campaign with an ankle problem, returning to action in November.
He has scored five Premier League goals this season.
