Nicholson's quest for grand slam comes undone

A disastrous showjumping has dropped the New Zealand rider Andrew Nicholson out of the top 20 at the Kentucky horse trials, scuttling the Burghley champions' quest to win all three equestrian grand slams.

The defending Kentucky champion, on board his Burghley title winning horse Avebury, recorded 24 jump faults and a time penalty to fall out of contention at the American event.

The 52-year-old was attempting to become just the second person in history to win all three equestrian grand slams, Burghley, Kentucky and Badminton.

That chance has now gone, though the New Zealander will still be desperate to perform well in England next month, where he'll attempt to win his maiden Badminton crown.
