NRL not worried about crowd numbers - yet

The National Rugby League says it's not going into panic mode after poor crowds in the opening round.

The code's in danger of recording its lowest attendance in more than a decade.

The highest crowd of the round was the 27,000 who attended Thursday's blockbuster between bitter rivals South Sydney and reigning premiers the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium.

The average across the eight games was 15,800.

The NRL's director of commercial and marketing Paul Kind says they'll give it a few more weeks before they assess the numbers.

Kind says every sport has ups and downs and they're confident that growth in attendance is possible.

The Warriors will be hoping for a big crowd for their first home game this weekend against the Dragons at Eden Park.
