McCullum and Williamson rescue NZ

6:41 pm on 6 February 2014

Centuries to batsmen Kane Williamson and Brendon McCullum have rescued New Zealand on day one of the first cricket Test against India at Eden Park in Auckland.

After losing the toss and being put into bat, openers Peter Fulton and Hamish Rutherford were dismissed cheaply before Ross Taylor was caught out for just three.

Coming together with the score at 30 for 3, Williamson and McCullum combined for a fourth wicket stand of 221 that restored respectability to the New Zealand score board.

Williamson was eventually caught behind for 113 after tea while his captain anchored the innings until stumps with the support of all rounder Corey Anderson.

New Zealand will resume their first innings tomorrow on 329 for 4 with McCullum unbeaten on 143 and Anderson 42 not out.

India's lanky pace bowler Ishant Sharma snared two wickets for 62 runs from his 21 overs while the veteran Zaheer Khan took two for 98 off 23.
