Boycott calls England "clowns"

9:29 am on 7 January 2014

Former England cricketer Geoffrey Boycott has accused the current team of batting like "one-day clowns" after their 5-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia.

In the series England were bowled out for under 200 on six occasions.

It was only the third times in Ashes history that England had been thrashed 5-0 by arch-rivals Australia but Boycott says there was a key difference between this result and the last whitewash in 2006/07.

Boycott says England were totally humiliated by an Australian team that is good, but not great.

Boycott says the last clean sweep was achieved by a team containing once-in-a-lifetime players Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Adam Gilchrist and there was no shame in losing 5-0 to them but England should be ashamed and embarrassed to lose so abjectly to this lot.

He says the current team's extensive backroom staff meant players had stopped thinking for themselves.
