The first seeded player has fallen at the Auckland Tennis Classic.

The German, Mona Barthel, was swept out of the tournament after sporadic rain delayed the opening session by two hours.

The 7th seeded Barthel is the first major casualty after losing to the Austrian, Yvonne Meusburger, 6-4 6-3.

Barthel was a beaten semi-finalist in Auckland last year, but was unable to replicate that form against an opponent ranked 49th in the world.

On centre court, the highly rated American, Christina McHale was beaten by 6-4 6-3 by the Spaniard, Garbine Muguruza.

Following that match, the 5th seeded American, Jamie Hampton eventually got the better of the Austrian, Tamira Paszek, 1-6 6-0 6-3.

Elsewhere, the Czech Karolina Pliskova overcame the Argentinian, Paula Ormachea 7-6 6-1.
