Golfer shoots 59

The Spanish golfer Jorge Campillo has been denied a world record after shooting 59 in South Africa.

The score gave Campillo a share of the clubhouse lead at 11 under par at the weather-affected Nelson Mandela Championship European Tour event on Friday.

The 59, which included seven birdies and two eagles, will not go into the record books as the joint-best 18 hole total in history due to placing being allowed on the rain-softened fairways at the par-70 Mount Edgecombe golf club.

Campillo's 59 would have equalled the PGA record that is shared by six men, the last of which was Jim Furyk, who carded his score earlier this year.

On Sunday, South Africa's Dawie Van der Walt fired a four under 66 during the third and final round to win the Nelson Mandela Championship by two shots.
