Wellington swimmer fails to break Channel record

The Wellington long distance swimmer Casey Glover has recorded the fastest time this year in completing the English Channel swim, but failed to break the record for crossing the strait.

Glover, who holds the record for the fastest crossing of Cook Strait, was attempting the record for the 34-kilometre crossing from Dover to Calais, but the 26-year-old says the conditions and tides acted against him.

His time of nine hours and 16 minutes is the best this year, but well short of the record of six hours, 55 minutes.

Glover says at this stage he has no plans for any future marathon swims.

Jellyfish, raw sewage, hypothermia and one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world were among some of the perils Glover had to overcome.
