New Zealand Rowing has a world champion men's eight after the under-23 crew won the gold medal at their world championships in Austria.

Not since the Harry Mahon era in the early eighties when the senior men's crew won succesive world titles, has

New Zealand had a men's eight celebrating on the world stage.

A senior crew failed to qualify for last year's Olympics, but Rio2016 appears to be within their grasp after this morning's win.

Coach Ian Wright says they expected a good result for the eight in Austria after training well and recording good times in New Zealand.

It was a good regatta for the under 23's with all 7 New Zealand crews making A finals, winning a gold medal, two silver and two bronze.
