The New Zealand cricketers need 278 off 38 overs to beat India in the opening one day international in Napier.

India made 273 for four, after the match was reduced to 38 overs per side following a two hour rain delay but under the Duckworth Lewis system India's total has been boosted by four runs.

Skipper M.S. Dhoni top scored with 84 not out, Virender Sehwag made 77 and Suresh Raina 66.

The tourists were particularly harsh on Black Caps bowler Kyle Mills who went for 69 off his seven overs.
