The Black Caps are 1-0 up in their three-match one day international series against the England cricketers after a dramatic opening game on Sunday night in Hamilton.

Brendon McCullum produced a match-winning innings while a limping Martin Guptill returned after retiring hurt to guide New Zealand to a three-wicket victory at Seddon Park.

McCullum finished on 69 while Guptill, who retired hurt on three after he strained his left hamstring only to return when New Zealand were 218 for seven, was 27 not out as the hosts scored reached their target of 259 with seven balls to spare.

McCullum made amends for running out 22-year-old Kane Williamson, whose 74 had the home side well placed at 142 for three in the 34th over.

New Zealand had done well to restrict England to under 260 after they'd been 180 for two.

Pace bowler Mitchell McClenaghan finished with figures of four for 56 but he picked up a side strain which will rule him out of the rest of the series and New Zealand's domestic season.

Martin Guptill's hamstring wll be assessed on Monday but he'll definitely miss the second match of the series.

McCullum says the most pleasing aspect of their win was the character they showed when they were behind the eight ball.
