Vettel wins in Suzuka, closes gap on Alonso

The German driver Sebastian Vettel has slashed the Formula One title race to just four points after winning the Japanese Grand Prix.

Championship leader Fernando Alonso in a Ferrari spun out of the race on the very first corner.

Red Bull's double defending world champion escaped the chaotic start and sped away to win by more than 20 seconds from Ferrari's Felipe Massa with home favourite Kamui Kobayashi in a Sauber grabbing his first podium finish.

The 25-year-old Vettel, who won in Singapore two weeks ago, threw the championship wide open as he became the only man this year with back-to-back victories.

With five races left, he trails Alonso 194 points to 190.
