The A-League football season has kicked off with an upset in the Melbourne derby, after Melbourne Heart beat Melbourne Victory 2-1 at Etihad Stadium.

First half goals to David Williams and former Wellington Phoenix forward Dylan Macallister snuffed out dual championship winning coach Ange Postecoglou's hopes of a first-up win with his new club.

The All Whites forward Marco Rojas equalised for the Victory on 24 minutes but it was new Heart coach John Aloisi who took the honours with his side's high pressing game winning an entertaining match in front of more than 42,000 fans.
