12:37 pm on 6 September 2012

Maria Sharapova's set up an all-star semi-final at the US Open tennis tournament, after beating France's Marion Bartoli in three sets in their quarter-final.

The Russian will face Belarussia's world number one Victoria Azarenka for a place in the final at New York, after Sharapova and Bartoli came back for a second day, after rain wiped out most play on day nine in New York

Bartoli leding the first set 4-0 and won it 6-3 but Sharapova took the second set by the same scoreline before the 2006 champion won the third 6-4 and the match.

Sara Errani beat her best friend and doubles partner, fellow Italian Roberta Vinci, in straight sets in their quarter-final , 6-2 6-4.

Errani will next face fourth seeded local Serena Williams, who beat Serbia's Ana Ivanovic 6-1 6-3.

The defending men's champion Novak Djokovic was making light work of his fourth round match against Switzerland's Stanislav Wawrinka before the Swiss retired, handing the Serb the match 6-4 6-1 3-1.

Andy Roddick played his final match against fellow big server Juan Martin del Potro - the retiring American veteran took the first set in a tiebreak but the Argentine won the second, also in a tiebreak, and then took the last two sets 6-2 6-4.

Only two of the six scheduled singles matches were completed on Wednesday NZT - the ninth day of competition - as heavy showers interrupted play on four separate occasions. More than six hours were lost.

Tournament organisers eventually called off play in the evening session with three men's fourth round matches still in progress, all in the first set.

In the only two matches that went the distance, world number one Victoria Azarenka beat women's champion Sam Stosur in the quarter-finals and Spain's David Ferrer beat Richard Gasquet in straight sets in a fourth round clash.
