Men's football team beaten by UAE

The New Zealand men's football team has been beaten 4-2 by the UAE in Austria in their final warmup match for next week's London Olympics.

Shane Smeltz scored late in the first half as the Oly Whites trailed 2-1 at the break.

Marco Rojas then levelled the scores after 50 minues, before the UAE scored twice to seal the match.

New Zealand open their Olympic campaign against Belarus in Coventry next weekend.

It's hoped their number one goalkeeper Jake Gleeson will be over worry over his injury worry.

Gleeson didn't play against UAE as he continues to recover from a groin injury suffered in Saturday's loss to South Korea in Seoul, and the 18-year-old Scott Basalaj flew out to London as cover for Gleeson on Thursday night.

Basalay's call-up means his Lower Hutt City club will miss one of their standout players in this weekend's Chatham Cup quarter-final against Birkenhead United in Auckland.
