Gillespie disappointed not to get a chance at record

8:43 am on 26 March 2012

Having spent the bulk of the first three days of the third and final test against South Africa in the field, most of the Black Caps were no doubt relieved when the declaration came, but fast bowler Mark Gillespie wasn't among them.

South Africa declared at 474 for nine in their first innings late yesterday, leaving Gillespie with six wickets for 113, one wicket shy of what could have given him the best bowling figures for a New Zealander against South Africa.

The New Zealand great John Reid has that honour taking six for 60 on the 1961 tour of South Africa.

Gillespie's playing just his fifth test, but it's his third five wicket bag against the Proteas.

The Black Caps will resume at 65 for none this morning with Daniel Flynn on 35 and Martin Guptill on 28.
