Progress made in breeding database

There has been further progress in the reorganisation of the dairy industry's livestock breeding databases.

It comes with the Minister for Primary Industries granting consent for changes to the constitution of animal genetics company Livestock Improvement Corporation.

That was necessary to allow LIC to transfer its core database, containing historic breeding information about dairy cattle, to industry body Dairy NZ.

It will become part of a new expanded database that Dairy NZ is setting up for the use of the whole industry.

That will include all the information required for animal breeding evaluation purposes, such as details about the volume and quality of milk produced by individual animals.

Chief executive Tim Mackle said it expects the transfer to finally happen in December, after what has been a lengthy and complex process.
