There are calls for the Government to impose stiffer sentences on rustlers after a single sheep was poached from Auckland's Cornwall Park at the weekend and another was found caught in an illegal gin trap.
Federated Farmers said that it was shocked by the theft and trapping and hopes tougher penalties are introduced for stock thieves.
The ACT Party says if the Government had a three strikes policy for rustlers it wouldn't have happened in the first place.
Cornwall Park is home to 600 ewes and 150 cattle which are run over about 120 hectares on the farm in the heart of Auckland with unrestricted public access.
Cornwall Park Trust Board director Michael Ayrton says while the weekend's incidents are alarming - the farm's actually been incredibly lucky regarding rustling.
"We've been very fortunate - we've had very few stock losses in the 23 years that I've been here.
The public are our eyes and ears and do a great job of supporting us in terms of notification of these sorts of things that happen."
Mr Ayrton says they're surprised at how few sheep go missing - given the farm's easy accessibility.
