A farmer who complained to the Auditor-General's office about the voting system Beef + Lamb New Zealand is using, is switching his attention to the meat companies.
John McCarthy, who farms in the central North Island, considers the voting process undemocratic and unfair to smaller farmers, because Landcorp and the meat companies that own stock are also allowed to vote.
Mr McCarthy said the Auditor-General's office has told told him it can't consider his complaint because it only deals with government entities.
However, he said his campaign has generated a lot of interest and support from farmers.
He is now considering filing a complaint with the Commerce Commission instead, about the way meat companies set prices.
Mr McCarthy said wild price spirals have to be stopped and are unsustainable.
He said someone has to look at this and he has widespread farmer support for such an investigation.
On the voting issue, he said Beef + Lamb should have considered changing the rules under its constitution before seeking farmer support for the use of reserve and levy money.
