Mayor urged not to use public transport

10:17 am on 7 February 2011

Auckland Mayor Len Brown is being urged to abandon his trips on public transport, because they are costing ratepayers money and adding to his carbon footprint.

Mr Brown regularly catches the train to help promote the use of public tranport.

But Orakei Cr Cameron Brewer, says while Mr Brown takes the train, the mayoral car is driven along the southern motorway, using fuel and wasting staff time.

A spokesperson for the mayor says he takes the train about once a week, and the benefit to public transport patronage outweighs the impact on the mayoral car fuel bill.

He says the mayor enjoys the experience as it allows him to talk to people about the issues affecting them.
