Fifteen people were arrested at the Hokitika Wildfoods Festival, the police say.

About 6500 people attended the annual event in the West Coast town this weekend.

The festival features demonstrations by chefs, seminars and competitions about unusual foods.

A police spokesperson said the crowds were generally well behaved. The arrests were for minor offences including fighting and disorderly conduct.

Officers had to shut down a party opposite the festival venue in Cass Square after people threw bottles onto the road and into the event.

Three people were caught drink driving.
