Power restored to thousands in Otago

6:12 pm on 11 March 2016

Power is cut off to just 38 properties in Otago, after severe winds cut electricity to thousands last night.

Aurora Energy says power has been restored to more than 7500 customers since last night, with repairs set to continue into the night and over the weekend.

It says some of those still cut off can expect to remain without power overnight until repairs are completed, including replacing poles.

Power was cut to homes in Dunedin after severe winds yesterday brought down power lines and trees.

Power was also cut to nearly 3000 properties in Southland and parts of Otago.

Energy crews were stood down for the night late in the evening, but were back on the job this morning.

There were also snapped branches on State Highway 1 between Hampden and Oamaru.

Drivers were being told to take care while travelling and treat any downed power lines as being live.

MetService said winds in Dunedin reached gusts of up to 152kms/hr last night.

Its wind-reading gear at the city's airport had broken, but forecasters did not know if the wind had caused the damage.
