The Ministry of Education received two complaints from parents and wrote to Auckland Grammar School and Cornwall Park District School to explain they could not charge a ballot application fee.

Auckland Grammar sought $50 from prospective parents, while Cornwall Park School sought $75, the ministry said.

It told both schools that if parents did pay, it would infer their children's places would be secured.

Cornwall Park has refunded parents and is no longer requesting a fee.
