Two people are dead and several are seriously injured after a head on collision on State Highway 3 south of Whanganui this morning
An 18-year-old female driver and a 47-year-old male driver died at the scene at Kaitoke after two vehicles crashed just before 5am today.
Police said they are working to contact next of kin.
Several passengers were trapped in the wreckage, and were extracted by police and fire crews.
A man in his 20s has been flown to Palmerston North Hospital with serious injuries, and two others were taken to Whanganui Hospital.
Diversions are in place between Pauri Road and Marani Road, and the road is expected to remain closed until scene investigations are completed.
