The fire then spread to nearby pine trees on the urban fringe of the city in the suburb of Owhiro Bay.

An ambulance spokeswoman said one patient, in a serious condition, was being transported to Wellington Hospital.

Firefighters are working to get access to the blaze on Happy Valley Road near the city landfill and Carlucci Land mini-golf.

At least five pumping appliances are on the scene.

A helicopter with a monsoon bucket is now at the scene, as fire crews are having troubling getting to the blaze due to strong winds and because the fire is on a hill.

Part of Happy Valley Road is blocked and traffic has been diverted.

There are several houses at the foot of the hill, but none have been evacuated.
