A large fire on Hamilton's main drag has destroyed a restaurant overnight.
Around 60 firefighters from Hamilton, Ngaruawahia and Cambridge battled the blaze at the Domaine Eatery restaurant on Victoria Street after being called at 2.26am today.
Waikato assistant area commander Darryl Papesch said neighbours on the second story of an adjacent building called emergency services after they heard the alarm.
"We got called out to a fire alarm and smoke showing from the Domaine restaurant in Hamilton which is a well-established restaurant, it's been here for years.
"Upon arrival they found a fire at the rear of the building which is a restaurant and an upstairs apartment which then had in a few minutes, the whole building was well involved in fire."
The Domaine Eatery is in the middle of a large block of buildings but Mr Papesch said firefighters were able to stop the flames spreading to adjoining buildings.
"The restaurant is 100 percent damaged, it's completely burnt out. But the adjacent buildings have had a little bit of smoke damage."
He said nobody was inside at the time and the people in the adjoining building evacuated.
Mr Papesch said it was too early to say what caused the fire but investigators were on scene.
