A 50-year-old woman suffered serious injuries to her head and arms in an attack in her home on Wednesday evening.

Singh was in an agitated mood when he appeared in court.

He has been remanded without plea to a mental health facility for a psychiatric assessment and will reappear in court in about two weeks.

Police were alerted to Mr Singh's whereabouts yesterday morning after he was identified by members of the public in Mangere, who detained him until officers arrived.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson said the woman's injuries were very serious.

"She has some injuries to her head and her arms as a result of the sword attack," he said.

"She will require significant treatment at the hospital but she's in a stable condition."
