An Australian woman hit by a car on the Bluff Highway on Monday morning was already lying on the road, police say.
The 37-year-old woman, who has not yet been named, was hit by a car driven by a Bluff resident at 12.50am on State Highway 1 about 5 kms from Bluff.
Detectives are trying to piece together the events that led to her death, which they said remained unexplained.
They want to know why she was lying on the road, and whether she was asleep or already dead when struck.
Police said the woman was wearing a blue jacket and pink shoes, and they would like to hear from anyone who saw her on the highway at any time after 9pm Sunday.
