One person is dead and two others have been airlifted to Christchurch Hospital after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed on State Highway 8 just south of Tekapo.

The police said the car rolled several times near Lake Pukaki about 4.30pm.
The road will be closed while police conduct a scene examination, which is exected to take several hours. Detours are available.
