A 10-year-old boy is in an induced coma after sustaining a serious head injury at his Invercargill school.

He remained in a critical condition in Dunedin Hospital's intensive care unit following an operation last night.
The boy was injured before classes began at Sacred Heart School yesterday morning, but neither the police nor the school will confirm how it happened.
Police said they were still investigating the circumstances that led up to the incident.
Traumatic incident staff from the Ministry of Education have joined Victim Support in providing assistance to the school.
Police said they were working with the boy's family, the school and the Ministry of Education.
