A major review of policing on the West Coast is underway, which will look at whether staff are deployed in the right places to meet community needs.

The Tasman District Commander said the review aimed to improve the quality of services on the coast, with a change in focus towards crime prevention.

Superintendent Karyn Malthus said staff numbers would not be affected, but the review would examine where those staff need to be located.

Police said the review was not in response to any particular incident and was routine.

The review was expected to be completed in October, followed by a consultation process.
