Police were called to the Moana Avenue house by the girl's mother just after 4am, where they found her daughter's body.

The mother was then taken to Auckland Hospital with superficial injuries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Baldwin said a scene examination was now underway, but initial indications showed there was no sign of a break-in or disturbance, and police were not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.

The girl's next of kin is yet to be notified.

Neighbour Des Gilmore said a woman and her daughter lived at the house.

He said he returned home about 8pm last night to find the woman's car parked in her driveway with the lights on and a door open.

He knocked on her front door but there was no answer, so he turned the lights off and went home.

Mr Gilmore said he knew the family well, and had looked after their home when they went on holiday to Malaysia for three months recently.

He said they had visited the woman's parents over there.

Other neighbours said they did not know the pair and had not heard any unusual noises coming from the property overnight.
