Police have named the elderly man found dead in his Christchurch home on Sunday.
He was 87-year-old Harold Richardson.
A post mortem examination has been completed and his next of kin have been advised of his death.
A 16-year-old appeared in the Christchurch Youth Court yesterday charged with murder.
Detective Inspector Tony Hill said a team of about 18 staff was working on the homicide investigation and that the examination of Mr Richardson's home in Upper Riccarton would likely take several more days.
He said police would be conducting inquiries in the area for sightings of Mr Richardson on the day of his death, and the day before it.
