Two people have been seriously injured after a car left the road in Marlborough early this morning and rolled down a bank several times before coming to rest in a paddock.
Four people from Kaikoura were in the car and police said initial inquiries point towards speed and alcohol as contributing factors.
The car was travelling down the Awatere Valley when the crash happened.
Emergency services were called shortly before 5.30am, and a 23-year-old woman with serious spinal and internal injuries and a 20 year old man with severe leg fractures were airlifted to Wellington Hospital.
The other 22-year-old female passenger and 20-year-old male passenger were taken by ambulance to Wairau Hospital where their injuries are described as minor.
