Detective Inspector Tom Fitzgerald said the matter was brought to the attention of police and health authorities on 10 April, when the baby was admitted to Dunedin Hospital with a brain injury and multiple fractures to her limbs.

He said a significant investigation has been undertaken over the past three weeks by the Dunedin Police Child Protection Team, working closely with Child, Youth and Family (CYF) and the Southern District Health Board.

He said they have spoken to a number of people from the child's wider family throughout New Zealand.

Mr Fitzgerald said the information obtained to date has been helpful in establishing the cause of the injuries and the investigation was now in its final stages.
