The Christchurch school principal whose students were in Nepal when the earthquake struck says it's an enormous relief to have them home.

25 students and four teachers from St Margaret's College were there as part of the World Challenge programme, on a three week expedition building a school 40 kilometres from Kathmandu.

They spent the days after the magnitude 7.8 quake camping outside Kathmandu and helping local people.

The principal, Gillian Simpson, said many of the girls' parents had felt helpless waiting for them to return, and last night's homecoming was emotional.

She said the school would be organising pastoral care for the students and staff involved.
