One person has died and five have been injured following a crash between two vehicles on State Highway One near Waimate this afternoon.

One person was taken to hospital by helicopter with very serious injuries, while another four were taken by ambulance with moderate to serious injuries.

The crash involved two vehicles on State Highway One south of St Andrews.

Police said the highway had been reopened after being closed for an examination of the crash site.

Meanwhile, police named two crash victims who died in the past two weeks on roads in Canterbury.

Fifty-year-old Jacqueline Helen Marsden from Rotorua, who was a passenger in a car being driven over the Pukaki Dam, died in a head on crash over Easter.

Thirty-nine-year-old Iyad Hassan Mohammad Abunahleh, a New Zealand resident originally from Jordan, died in a head on crash with a stock truck near the Rangitata Bridge the weekend before Easter.

Both cases are still being investigated and have been referred to the Coroner.
